Kansas HB-2036 -- Creating a property tax exemption for retired and disabled veterans

There is no reviving the bills in the special session. Essentially the governor will call a special session next month for some type of tax bill. Legislators can only work within the parameters set by the governor. So only tax related items such as income and property, etc . They will be there everyday until its finished.

So depending on the parameters set by the gov. it could be included in the new bill.

He statement behind vetoing this bill was garbage. Tax relief = bad and might undo the work I've done as governor. I'm going to live here long enough to vote her out of office then bounce to Missouri.

Looking forward to starting back up in a few weeks. We were forced to setup a new website and unfortunaly lost all of our subscribers. So if you were getting updates previously via email will need to sign up again.

So it looks like they are trying to pass a new bill but only 75% exemption correct? Almost put an offer on a home in KS but am holding off. Can't afford to move there to be by family due to higher cost of living.
It wouldn’t be an exemption. To address the constitutionality issue, they’ve structured it as a refundable tax credit at the state level. While it’s not an ideal solution, it’s more than what currently exists. The credit would cover 75 percent, as proposed. Subject to change by any committee or chamber amendments. We will advocate to increase that to 100% in order to be competitive with other states.

They typically wait to vote out of committee. Its an undetermined amount of time, can be days or weeks.
Seriously contemplating moving to KS but I need this to pass. I don't think KS understands how many are like me that can't afford to take the financial hit to move to their state. They lose out on all the spending our family would contribute along with health spouses that can work. They don't understand that there are additional benefits not just a cost due to lost revenue from property taxes.

Provis I am from Nebraska and they offer no property tax for 100% VA P&T. Not sure if you need to be in Kansas, but Nebraska is very similar.

I am from between Kansas City and Lawrence and been waiting for property tax to be approved. Hoping the gambling and weed legalization only help our cause. Surprisingly NJ is very pro veteran friendly compared to most states which is where I currently reside. Disclaimer: I final out from NJ in two days and plan to be here for a little while to get my life squared away going through 2 year med board adventure.

Thanks! Good to know! There are a ton of places that do exempt property taxes for disabled veterans who are P&T. Kansas is ranked the 12th highest tax state when taking in all taxes and government fees into account. That is wild!

I'm in Missouri and we've looked at Nebraska. Not only do they have property tax waiver, they also have education waivers for dependents. Definitely a state that takes care of veterans.

Oklahoma does a good job too! Texas being the best. My wife has a DV plate and an medal plate for our 2nd vehicle. Both vehicles the EV surcharge is waived and the cost to register each vehicle per year is $7.50 each! That's $15 a year to register 2 EV vehicles in Texas! I would iterally have to sell one or both my vehicles if I end up moving to KS even if they get their act together and help out on property taxes. When I went to the KS vehicle property tax estimator the total for both my cars =$4,500 a year. That's $375 per month in taxes just to keep my current vehicles if and when I move to Kansas!

The silence is deafening.

The House Tax Committee is seeing zero traction as we wait for legislators to push the bill forward.

These same legislators supported identical measures last year — before their elections.

Now, there is no movement.

We ask you to join us in calling or emailing the committee leadership to ask why they've given up on helping disabled Veterans.

Almost bought a house this month in KS. Glad I didn't. The property taxes are super crazy! I wonder if KS even realizes how much revenue they are costing their economy by being so backwards on this issue?
