HI, I am in the reserves and just received orders for a medical retirement for Apr 07, 2022. I am trying to calculate how my pay will change after this. My information is as follows:

Currently receiving VA 100% T&P (around 3,300 no depend one daughter 20 yrs old)
DOD just awarded me 70% combat related one medical issue, purple heart and kicking me out for medical
26 year in service
23 "good years"
E-8 since 2013
2,487 points
High 3 avg the calcs show 6,759
6 years 9 month considered active duty (orders state this as well)

So Im wondering if I may get CRSC pay, I will be applying for it once they let me. Also will I get any other pay for medical retirement or is it offset. Also will my pay be different at 60? Im 43 right now. I tried to talk to DFAS but they weren't much help really.

Thank you so much for your help, please let me know what else numbers I may provide.

Hello @Watching Dawn

All the info described at this link is necessary for a CRSC estimate.

Information necessary for CRSC estimate: LINK <--- You will need to provide your active duty equivalent...I do not convert points.

Collection of CRSC information LINK <—-

Your disability retired pay will be reduced dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation received. Initially, the only type of "return" is CRSC if you are eligible. Once you attain the retirement age for reserve/NG retirement, you can apply for it and upon approval and submittal to DFAS (by HRC) that will trigger CRDP if otherwise eligible.

The following is needed for someone to compute your CRSC:
Accurate information needed within one reply:

1.--Average high three for basic pay The total high 3 is 6,759.

1a.-- I did receive a DoD disability retirement.

2.--DoD disability percentage
My DOD disability retirement (Chapter 61) percentage shown in my retirement orders was 70%.

3. --Active duty years and months
My total creditable points for retirement divided by 360 results in: 6 years and 9 months

4. --VA compensation (All of the following):
a. percentage; My VA Compensation percentage is 100%.
b. amount; The amount of my VA compensation is $3300.
c. dependents by category NONE

d. Also provide information pertaining to any SMCs you receive.
None i don't know what this is

5.--Projected or approved CRSC percentage by your service.
Projected CRSC percentage is 70%.

6.--Whether you qualify for another type of retirement .
I also qualify for a reserve retirement.

7.--Did you receive a REDUX/CSB payment?
I did not receive REDUX/CSB.

8.--Did you accept the Blended Retirement program option?
NO

@Watching Dawn

1. 6,759 x 70% = 4731 Retired pay
2. 4731 minus 3300 = 1431 residual retired pay you get to keep
3. 6 years and 9 months, 6.75 x 2.5% = 16.88% longevity multiplier
4. 6759 x 16.88% = 1140.92 Longevity portion of retired pay and a CRSC ceiling
5. CRSC at 70% =1,529.95 which is higher than the ceiling at item 4.
6. The combination of residual retired pay (item 2) and CRSC cannot exceed the longevity portion of retired pay (item 4)
7. Based on the info you provided, you will receive from
DFAS: 1431 residual retired pay and zero CRSC
VA: 3300 VA compensation

Ron

Note: Once you qualify for reserve retirement and CRDP, the same rule regarding "the combination" will still apply.

@RonG
I appreciate your quick response. Thank you for your help Ron. I guess this means that i will be taxed on the 1431 retired residual pay and it will be income?

Also thank you for your service, and continued service on this site.

The residual retired pay may or may not be taxable. It will be considered income.

TDRL/PDRL Exemption: If you retired under a disability law (Temporary Disability Retirement List or Permanent Disability Retirement List), your retired pay will be fully non-taxable if your pay is calculated based upon your military (not VA) disability percentage and you meet one of the following conditions:
  • You were in the military or under a contractual obligation to join the military on September 24, 1975, or
  • Your military disability rating is combat-related
The welcome letter you received from DFAS when you first retired indicates whether your pay is computed using your military percentage of disability or your years of service.
