How long did it take you to get your first VA payment?

First payment of VA compensation.

VA compensation begins to accrue on the first day of the month, following the month having the effective date.

Example:
--Discharged 5 April and entered into a retired status 6 April
--Effective date of VA compensation 6 April
--First accrual of VA compensation 1-31 May
--First payment: on/about 1 June (earliest possible date)

Yeah, theoretically. I want to know if I’ll be fighting the VA forever for my money or if they really do pay on time

I would first fight for receipt of my orders from the Navy and the DD 214. Did you have household goods to ship from your last duty stations?

What does eBenefits show for your VA claim? Or...have you called the VA for a status update?

No, I never got any of that. My command was never helpful in the past, now that I’m out I don’t expect them to be of much help either

What has the VA told you when you called them? Also with regard to the VA, recommend you review your eBenefits account to ensure they have your Direct Deposit correctly recorded.

See Apply - VA/DoD eBenefits <—-LINK

Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) include
DAV
AMERICAN LEGION
VFW
And many county governments have them

Within those organizations are Veteran Service Officers who assist former military personnel like you. I highly recommend you seek their assistance.

Furthermore, most military installations have a retiree services office.

If all else fails, contact one of your elected representatives.

Thank you so much

First day of retirement, late Apr.
VA pay begin accruing in May.
First payment due in June.
Payment arrived in June.

I might add, I uploaded my DD214 via E-benefits to the open VA claim as soon as the DD214 arrived by email from DoD.

This is an excellent example of the accrual of VA compensation. The "late Apr" first day of retirement shows that the retirement was not a regular retirement. All regular retirements occur on the first day of a month. CH 61 retirements can occur any day of a month.

If the retirement shown above was regular, the following would apply:
Last day of active duty = 30 Apr
First day in retired status = 1 May
VA begins to accrue 1 June
First payment = on/about 1 July (for 1 -30 June)

Thank you for your post.

What every you do don’t count on it to be at the first of the month after you retire….. VA pays at the first of the month for the prior month of eligibility.

Ron is absolutely 100% spot on correct… I retired purposely choosing Jan 30th 2016, so I would be out for one day (Jan 31st) and then get paid for the month of feb on March 1st. I don’t remember if the check came in March 1st I think it was later but the idea is solid and how rob explains it is exactly how it works.
