InterStim Device and Permanent Non-Deployable Status

Hello everyone,

Thank you for being part of this group! I am scheduled to retire in April 2026 after completing my Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO) following my promotion to CW3. However, I have the option to medically retire earlier to have an InterStim device reinstalled to manage my overactive bladder.

In 2008, I initially had the device implanted without realizing it would result in a permanent non-deployable status. At that time, regulations did not specify being discharged for this condition. Unfortunately, I had to have the device removed due to it dislodging from my back.

I am now at a critical decision point regarding when to have the device reinstalled. My primary concern is ensuring that I am not discharged just shy of reaching 20 years of service by September 5, 2025. I want to make a well-informed decision to achieve my retirement goals.

I have accrued terminal leave and plan to participate in a SkillBridge program during this period. I am currently seeking advice from anyone who has experienced a similar situation to help determine the optimal timing for the surgery.

Thank you for your support and insights.

Not quite the same situation but slightly similar. I am creeping towards my 20th year and was able to work my unit to delay the MEDBOARD until I was ready and will make it to 20. I had my device emplaced in DEC and started my board in FEB and are projected to make it through my 20 (and a little to spar). Most of the places that I've been stationed, everyone is super sympathetic towards people making their 20 if they are close.

I suggest you spend a few dollars and consult with an attorney. There are various ways to slow the process, but I don’t think you a slow the process until Apr 2026. The investment in an attorney is worth the surety it will bring.

So my 20 year mark is 05 SEP 25 vs my adso is April 2026. The med board will automatically cancel my service obligations for picking up CW3

A PEB cancels commitments.

Does this make you permanently nondeployable? I ask because I have been recommended for this and was specifically told it did not limit deployment? However, my urologist told me it was auto initiation for an MEB but primary told me that was not the case? Just interested in hearing your experience. I am Army.
