Hello everyone.

Im an airman currently in a code 37. I was placed in a code 37 approximately July 31, my official MEB 469 was input August 5th. So about 2 months. Ive been dealing with chronic back pain with bulging disks, degenerative changes, etc. i am Security Forces defender and for the past two years I have been on countless profiles and DNA due to mainly gear profiles (no wearing gear), and medications primarily. Ive been in for over 3 years, and my new assignment ive been at for a year is much more high speed and physically demanding which really did a number on my condition.

I have not heard any updates on my case yet. I believe my PCM submitted the NARSUM about a month ago.

I was curious if anybody can give me just a friendly rundown of what the whole process looks like, what to expect, etc.

Ive stayed in contact with my PEBLO and no updates yet. Their prediction is most likely a full MEB.

Additionally, in my commanders impact statement which I believe has been submitted to AFPC already, in the comments i did mention that i respectfully request to be retrained to into a less physically demanding AFSC because i have always been passionate about serving and feel maybe i coukd excel in a different career. My commander recommended “do not retain”, which at the end of the day I know he is looking out for my wellbeing and its in the best interest for my medical conditions. I was upset initially but with how bad my pain and function is, i do think the full MEB is the best option all things considered. I was curious if the request would still be taken into consideration as well.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

I would speak to JAG the person who deals with IDES. Ask them your chances of being found fit. Very few have a good chance of being found fit and they hurt themselves by trying to be found fit. You might deserve a medical retirement and end up with a severance check with no insurance if you try to be found fit for duty.

Lastly, consult and consider hiring a private IDES attorney. My wife hired one from the start and it was night and day how her case was handled compared to others who used the free IDES legal representation. They just have too many cases to handle to give anyone much time and effort into their case.

I am in the same boat, I want to be found fit for duty and am in the IDES process now. If I end up with a low VA rating, can I always go back and be reassessed? My "unfit" conditions are not bad and do not prevent me from doing my job...I still am kind of baffled it got this far as I thought I would be RTD for sure (IBS stuff thats very much managed as well as mental health which also is managed well on my part...nothing serious or detrimental to my doing my job well). I have my last VA exam (the mental health portion) next week which I am nervous about just because I feel well but don't want to shoot myself in the foot like you mentioned above.
