My Current Timeline, IDES or LDES?

I know the majority here always say IDES. However I want to give some of my situation and see what you guys think.

Conditions: Persistent depressive disorder, General anxiety disorder, chronic back pain (spinal compression, bulged discs, with left leg sciatica) sustained at work with mishap report filed

My current timeline is

Late March: IRILO/Code 37 Approved
April 25: Code 37 Flipped (they forgot?) and MH NARSUM complete
April 29: Physical NARSUM and CIS(do not retain) complete.
May 2: Submitted to AFPC.

So my situation, I am active duty living 1 1/2 hours from base (moved there for a medical issue with my spouse) so I commute 3 hours a day which is horrible on my back, the pain is making my mental health spiral. My natural contract ends Oct 2 2022, so I would most likely have to extend if I choose IDES. I also start college full time in August so I will be getting G.I Bill and FAFSA.

I really just want to be done ASAP..I am thinking LDES because I have a VA hospital and facilities 20 mins from my house, money will be tight but I can manage with G.I Bill/FAFSA and my wife's income for now.

The only worry I have is the rating.. but I am more than sure DOD will put me at or over 30%. I haven't been deployable since Afghanistan in 2020, I also haven't had a full PT test in 2+ years and was moved off flight line work to an admin role due to my back injury.

I would go IDES. Its only the C&P exams and by doing that you have more control and protections. If you aren't a Reserve or NG person you don't have any VA ratings for LDES to go off of and that increases your chances of being screwed. For LDES they can give you whatever rating they want and with no VA percentages to compare you could get royally screwed. If you choose LDES and it doesn't go your way you could have a very bad outcome since there isn't the protections in LDES that are in IDES. The beauty of IDES is that your branch MUST use the VA ratings for unfitting conditions. So if VA rates it 70% they HAVE to rate it 70%. I was in LDES a long time ago when IDES wasn't yet created (2005). The PEB came up with the OPPOSITE conclusion of my MEB. They gave me a zero rating. The VA gave me a higher rating starting the day I got out for the same condition.

This process sucks but don't go LDES just due to saving 1 month of time. Its not worth it in most cases.

Yeah that’s my only concern.. the drive is just killing me. Maybe the Air Force will be fast for once after AFPC returns their answer. Wishful thinking right!

Thanks for the response

I am almost on the same timeline as you are in regards to MEB process. Try working with you chain to see if you can possibly work remote or come in a few days a week opposed to all 5. They should be pretty supportive of you as you will be transitioning out soon anyways and cannot always rely on you for work.

I took your advice and talked with my shirt/shop chief today, the commander said its fine as long as my shop approves it. I think they are actually going to let me run a trial next month to see how it works out. 3 days there 2 days home or something similar to that.

August 19th: All VA claims closed and awaiting decision letter ( I am already 90%) important to note that the QTC Doc I saw whipped up a laundry list of small things secondary to existing VA issues. Otherwise, I think my VA claim would have been done at the end of July.
