No HHG move scheduled, retirement day coming up

what happens if retirement day comes but the HHG movers can’t come until after the date? Does the navy say adios? Do they extend your day to keep paying BAH?

Trying to get ahead of this before I get there.

If you look in the JTR, you have something like a year, or two years, to execute a move on the government's dime after a medical separation.

I know you can delay the move if you want, but what about when you cant move because all the movers for HHG are booked up? Do I just have to tough it out with my salary being cut in half because I go from AD pay to VA pay?

Not sure what the two things have to do with each other. Don't know the details of your situation. I was just saying it's possible to move later and have DOD pay for it.

To answer your original question: the Navy doesn't extend anything. You're out. No more pay, no more BAH.

Sweet! I can’t wait to struggle paying my rent because my retirement date came so fast and the movers are booked up

Have you talked to your command to see if they can expedite the movers with the HHG office? Or help in some other way?

Other than asking and being told I cannot schedule a move without retirement orders and that doing an LOI comes from the same place the orders come from, so it would make no difference? No.

Everyone is telling me "Good luck, San Diego is backed up on HHG moves."

Hello @kfill9393

Perhaps calling this office might result in some assistance.

Use of the Defense Personal Property System, or DPS, website is required to request shipment dates. People having difficulties with the DPS system can contact the Help Desk at 800-462-2176 or 618-589-9445.

Has the local transportation office told you what others have done under similar circumstances? It is likely that this type delay has occurred previously.

If i wasnt alone and injured i would
You can use the DITY money to hire packers and loaders. Usually some local firefighters have a side gig as movers. Or the drivers lounge at a local truck stop will have local day laborers on a board.

Are you still without a firm retirement date?

It is difficult to fix a problem if it does not exist (yet).

I applaud being proactive and precluding a problem, but if you don’t have a retirement date, I can see difficulties in developing a work-around.

If I read context correctly, he has his separation date, but no orders yet.

Retirement day is July 18th.

I suspect once you have orders you will have some leverage when seeking a solution. Just speculation on my part.
Senior NCOs in the chain of command often can help in resolving difficult problems. Recommend you seek that help upon receipt of orders.

A telephone call or visit by your Master Chief to the Transportation Office might help. At least that was my experience with various problems in another branch of service.

Trans should accept a letter (from command) in lieu of orders to schedule a date. They don’t like it, but it is their rules.

Hello @chaplaincharlie

Thank you for your important post.

That is a logical / sensible way to handle situations such those discussed in the HHG thread.

I have to wonder, where are all the senior NCOs in this saga? I always felt it was my responsibility help the more junior members survive the roadblocks that pop up.

Comment/Opinion:

Decades ago, I remember a sergeant major stating that senior NCOs represent the officers above him/her in rank. Example: A division CSM could be more influential than one at the battalion level. They support the command authority of commissioned officers. As the Secretary of the Army's representatives, NCOs carry out the orders of Commander-in-Chief through the chain of command. In carrying out orders, NCOs provide support, assistance, and advice to officers. The same basically holds true for the junior enlisted too.
