PDRL Reduce Age Retirement Reserve Component to start CRDP

Good morning,

I am looking for guidance for a reserve component Soldier that is PDRL, 20 year RC letter for retirement, receiving CRSC, and eligible for Reduce Age Retirement (Under age 60).
- Are you PDRL/Medically Retired and filed for reduce age retirement? Lessons learned?
- Did CRDP start when you drew your pay before age 60? Did it stay the disability pay or change to the points? Is that a pitfall?

All very good questions. I am PDRL and medically retired but am only 53 and NOT eligible for Reduced Age Retirement. I believe I need to file for my regular retirement at 60 to qualify for CRDP and let DFAS do their work. But I’m not sure if you have to file for retirement pay or is CRDP automatically paid without filling. I do know my current VA disability compensation and DOD medical retirement pay is higher than what my regular retirement pay would be at age 60.

Your welcome. Maybe someone with the complete answer to your question will help.
RonG might be able to help.

@SFC H

It is my understanding that in RC cases where the member was/is receiving disability retired pay, they must apply for RC retirement which, if qualified, will trigger the CRDP thru DFAS. Reason: Application for the retirement is understandably required.
Have seen many of these cases.

Conversely, regular retirements do not require any action for CRDP...it is truly automatic if qualified. Those folks must also apply for retirement at the appropriate time....but it is not associated with meeting an age requirement.

“RonG

640204. Non-Regular Retired Pay [reserve] Members eligible for retirement for non-regular service are not eligible to receive CRDP until they reach retirement age and have applied for and have become entitled to receive retired pay.”

Reserve members have to apply when eligible for retirement to get CRDP.

From a previous post.

Let's imagine a reservist who is eligible for non-regular retired pay (20 year letter) ends up retiring under CH 61 (PDRL) at age 40.

What happens if reserve members (eligible for non-regular retired pay) does NOT apply for non-regular retired pay?

Will they continued to receive pay under CH 61 or will it stop at age of eligibility (let's say, age 60)?

What about SBP elections/coverage? Do they stop at date of eligibility (let's say age 60)?

The reason for applying for non-regular retirement for such a retiree is usually "you would then be eligible for CRDP."

However... Assuming such a reservist was entitled to CRSC -- would there be any reason to apply for non-regular retirement?

Hello,

In 2023, CRDP became “CONCURRENT MILITARY RETIREMENT PAY AND DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS (DVA) DISABILITY COMPENSATION”. I use the term “Concurrent Receipt” for that lengthly title.

CRSC = you waive retired pay dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation received. The amount of CRSC might be less than the VA Offset. One can lose money by NOT choosing Concurrent Receipt…. You do receive the full VA comp.

Concurrent Receipt = you receive all of the longevity portion of retired pay and all your VA comp. Any retired pay in excess of the longevity is waived.

Hello,

I assume they would continue to be paid at the same rate and SBP coverage would continue.

These experts are better qualified to answer your last question(s): @Provis and @chaplaincharlie

You need to apply for your non regular retirement. At that time you can make a new selection regarding your SBP coverage. Its a brand new retirement and all the process are done again.
