After years of going to mental health and trying to figure out what is wrong with me, I have been diagnosed with Bipolar by 2 civilians’ psychologist and my Licensed Clinical Social Worker. The Military Psychologist doesn’t think I’m bipolar or he doesn’t have enough information yet to diagnose. I was originally told I would be put on a Medical Evaluation Board but the Psychiatrist changed his mind. I was put on Lamictal, which wasn’t preventing my elevated moods. I did a voluntarily inpatient stay at a military psych ward for 3 days. I followed up with my psychiatrist and he said it was probably anxiety and lack of sleep so he prescribed me an antidepressant which has never worked well with me. I ended up being aggressive with even worse sleep after a week. My wife almost called the police on me for Domestic Violence and my command ordered me to leave the house. I follow up with my psychiatrist and he now wants to put me on a medboard again. I am currently not in my mos because I require a top secret clearance and my command hasn’t granted me an interim. And I probably want get one after I disclose my recent problems to the investigators. I believe my Psychiatrist is going to keep my diagnosis at Unspecified mood (affective) disorder instead of bipolar which is usually found unfit. I have been in over 7 years.

My question is would I be found fit or unfit since I cant do my job because of a clearance and my mental health? I am currently working in a different section and I feel the commander could say that I could be retained because I’m still capable of working, just not in my actual MOS.

Would the board take into consideration the civilians diagnosis of bipolar or would they only look at the military psychiatrist diagnosis as the mood disorder?

I also have documented anxiety, depression, short term memory loss, insomnia and migraines. Would that be taken into consideration as well?

If I am found unfit but still get rated high enough by the VA would the command Adsep me or keep me and use me in a different capacity?

1. Fitness is determined by your ability to do your job, not do any job.

2. If you’re sent to a MEB, the VA MH doctor will determine what your diagnosis and percentage of disability, if any.

3. If the DoD finds you unfit due to MH, the VA percentage for MH must be applied.
