Good morning all!
Just trying to gather when i should expect my first va payment as i am retired. I ets 13oct and have been told everything from 1(,45,90 days after ets. From everyone including the va website. So I’m just trying to figure out what the general consensus is here so i can plan accordingly.

Hello,

If you are discharged or retired on 13 October 2019, the first month (earliest) you could accrue VA compensation is 1-30 November 2019 with payment on 29 November 2019 since 1 Dec and 30 Nov are on a weekend. This projection assumes you have VA compensation approved as part of your discharge processing.

Thanks so much for that quick response Ron. And so I don’t really grasp a whole lot of the separation things my current transpoc is 13 October If I started my permissive TDY 3October & my terminal leave 29 September would my ETS date still be 13 October(as in receive dd214) or would it be 29 September. I’m a recruiter so it’s really hard for me to get a response from anyone at defense as were my local installation which is about six hours away. Active army if that clarifies anything

Hello Denny,

Terminal leave and permissive TDY are in an active duty status. From the info available here, it appears your ETS will be 13 October if that is what you have been told.

I spent one year at the Houston MEPS on a compassionate assignment back in 80-81. Of course Ft Sam Houston was only 197 miles distant.

I retired on March 21.
My VA pay didn’t come into effect until July 1.

Keep in mind that it’s a pain with the Va when you get out. You don’t get your dd214 until your ACTUAL day of retirement. They won’t accept that stupid working copy you get before you get booted. I had a lot of leave saved up and got out Dec 22. On March 22 I went to the VA and they wanted my 214. I told them I didn’t have one. I said that you DON’T GET ONE IN YOUR HANDS WHEN YOU GO ON terminal leave and they looked at me like I was stupid. I contacted AFPC and they gave me a temp password to log into the Portal and print one out. It’s digitally signed now lol . I did the USMC before the AF and have a pen and ink 214 .

I guess it makes sense in the future, if you “lose your 214” you can always just print one out or print 100 out. I have no clue where my original USMC one is. I know I have a copy in Ebennies from when I signed up for the VA when I got out. Regardless. Good luck and hopefully your va pay goes in on time. Remember. Va pay for the month of JULY is on aug 1. Va pay for the month of August is on Oct 1st and so on.

"Remember. Va pay for the month of JULY is on aug 1. Va pay for the month of August is on Oct 1st and so on."

I think you have a typo: VA compensation for 1-31 August = payment on 1 September.

No typo. Va pay for any specific month is on the first of the next month. You’re talking specific dates man. I’m just helping the new fish. You don’t get paid VA pay for the month of December at the beginning of December. It will be at the END. Maybe that makes better sense.

I agree with your recent comment, but since the month following August is September; 1-31 Aug comp would be paid on 1 Sep not Oct 1st as you stated above.

You said, "Va pay for the month of August is on Oct 1st and so on." I think that was a typo.

Your concept is correct...just an error in the example.

"Month After Law" [my term]

Ref: 38 U.S. Code § 5111 - Commencement of period of payment

"... payment of monetary benefits based on an award or an increased award of compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation, or pension may not be made to an individual for any period before the first day of the calendar month following the month in which the award or increased award became effective as provided under section 5110 of this title or such other provision of law."

Also:

This is correct too: "You don’t get paid VA pay for the month of December at the beginning of December. It will be at the END. Maybe that makes better sense. "

Yes good example by you.
