Hello,

I just found out to be unfit and received my army ratings at 50% and va ratings at 80%. I’ve been in the military for 2.5 years. I want to know how much I will need to pay in severance pay and how much will I take home after that?

thank you

If your DOD percentage is 50%, you won't be eligible for severance pay. 30% and above is a monthly stipend and tri-care for life. The medical coverage alone is worth it's weight in gold. The DOD monthly payment for only having 2.5 years in will get washed out by the VA money. You don't qualify for CDRP and as such have to choose between tax free VA money or DOD pay. The obvious choice is VA pay as it is more and tax free.

Hope this helps.

DoD percentage: 50%
VA percentage: 80%

As indicated in guardguy11's post, the following will occur:

1. If you have 2.5 years, then the total of the 30 months base pay you received will be divided by 30 = retired pay base
Retired pay base x 50% = retired pay

2. The retired pay determined at item one will be reduced dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation at 80% (with number of dependents).

3. You get to keep any residual retired pay (left over) from item 2. There might not be any.

4. You also receive your VA compensation.

5. If you have combat related disabilities, see: A Supplement to CRSC Information <--LINK

So I will get retired pay and va compensation?

What will I owe in terms of the dod side?

I suspect you read what I wrote about your retired pay being reduced by the amount of your VA comp. That means it is unlikely you will receive any net retired pay.

Good luck,
Ron

Like Ron said, nothing. I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what is happening to your military career.

When the military breaks you medically due to your service, specifically being disabled over 30%, the DOD owes you, not the other way around.

Thanks this whole process has me so confused.
I get it. When you go through this process, you feel like you're on an island and that no one really cares about you any more. Since your initial post didn't have much information, what does your timeline look like? Where are you in the process?

Since you already have your ratings, you should be almost done. Have you heard any information on getting your retirement orders and final out date?

That is understandable.

Bottom line:
It is quite likely that you will end up with only the VA compensation. There will be an accounting of your retired pay, but each month it will be reduced by the amount of your VA compensation due to current law.

My peblo says they are typing up my 199 as of yesterday. He doesn’t give me much more than that.
